Places of Remembrance 1914-1918 > Belleau WoodThe battle of Belleau Wood, in June 1918, marked one of the first engagements of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. The heroic behavior of the U.S Second Division – half composed of a Marine Brigade helped putting an end to a German offensive which goal was to reach Paris.
This battle of Belleau Wood is still considered today as one of the major engagements of the U.S. Marines and at the origin of the Marines’ reputation.
Today, the wood is enjoyed by hikers, though traces of the fighting are still evident. Shell-holes and foxholes can be found everywhere, some turned into ponds, and several artillery pieces are exposed in the main clearing.
